Eli Creek, just 15 minutes from your apartment, provides excellent swimming in the largest of the pristine freshwater streams which flow into the ocean. And just 5 minutes further, your thoughts will go back in time as you examine the rusting hull of the Maheno shipwreck, washed ashore in 1935.

A short 45 minute drive north and you can experience the natural beauties of Indian Head, an excellent rocky headland lookout onto the beaches and dunes. While you are there cool off in Middle Rocks’ deep natural rock pools, known as champagne pools. Or take a short drive south to enjoy swimming in the deep midnight blue waters of Lake McKenzie.

Getting There

You can reach Sailfish on Fraser by sea or air. From Urangan Boat Harbour where you can watch the whales in season, drive to Sailfish through the lush rainforest that abounds with Satinay and Brush Box, Kauri Pines and Piccabeen Palms. A 4WD is essential and these are available for hire at Hervey Bay, Rainbow Beach and on Fraser Island.

Air Fraser Island provides a 20 minute scenic flight from Hervey Bay across the Sandy Straits to the island. The flight lands at Happy Valley, almost adjacent to Sailfish on Fraser.

There are barge services from Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach to Moon Point and Inskip Point, a 50 – 60 minute 4WD trip to Sailfish on Fraser. Bus transfers by Top Tours are available from Moon Point to Happy Valley.

Fraser Island is 3 1/2 hours north of Brisbane by car, and 4 1/2 hours from the Gold Coast.

Getting There

From Rainbow Beach

Turn off the Bruce Highway at Gympie onto the Tin Can Bay Road and follow the signs to Rainbow Beach. (Approx. 60 min traveling) The ranger station is located on your right just before you enter the business centre, where you can pick up your permit for Fraser Island. This can also be purchased on line at www.epa.qld.gov.au or book by phone on 13 13 04 (24 hrs). Turn into Inskip Point Road follow the signs to the barges.

The Manta Ray Barges (Green and Yellow) run every 30 min. or on demand every day from dawn to dusk. (No bookings required)

A discount of $10.00 will be offered off your accommodation upon presentation of your Mantaray Barges ticket.

The duration of the trip across the bay is only 10-15 minutes where you will embark at Hook Point turning right. Follow the beach for approx. 62 km. to Yidney Rocks where you drive up the by-pass ramp to the back of the apartments.

From Hervey Bay

Barges leave from Riverheads and Urangan boat harbour. Bookings required. Tel. 1800 249 122. A permit is required for Fraser Island. This can be purchased on-line at www.epa.qld.gov.au or book by phone on 13 13 04 (24 hrs).

Once embarked onto the island follow the signs to Eurong onto the beach. (approx. 1 hr) Turn left and follow the beach for approx 23 km. to Yidney Rocks where you drive up the by-pass ramp to the back of the apartments.

The Retreat provides comfort and privacy for its guests with a swimming pool and BBQ area within the complex and bushwalking, swimming and fishing all nearby.

The Retreat allows guests the option to cater for themselves or enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the Satinay Bar and Bistro. The Bistro is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and provides snacks and takeaway meals throughout the day.

Features of the Retreat include Individual timber lodges, 200m from the beach at Happy Valley, Swimming Pool, Barbeque, Bar, Bistro and General Store.

All lodges are fully serviced with cooking facilities, balconies and TV/Video.

Nestled into the hillside are individual lodges that have been constructed from Fraser Island timbers. Each have a verandah and offer 24 hour power, cooking facilities, TV / video, kitchenette, tea and coffee making facilities, ceiling fans and are serviced daily.

Amongst the landscaped gardens is a BBQ/entertaining area and a timber decked swimming pool. The main complex comprises a convenience store that stocks grocery lines, fuel and bottleshop supplies with EFTPOS facilities available. The licensed Satinay Bar & Bistro is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
